How Tyndale Mistook Himself for a Priest
Once upon a time, Tyndale was walking to a distant village to visit his relatives. He walked and walked, and night caught him on the way. Nearby was some village, and Tyndale decided to spend the night there. He knocked on one door, then another—no one had room. Finally, he came to a certain housewife."Could I stay the night here?"
"Why not? Come in. I already have some priest staying here. You can both sleep in the room together—you won’t be bored."
Tyndale entered the house. The hostess prepared beds for both of them. As she was leaving the room, Tyndale asked her:
"Hostess, could you wake me up early? I need to reach my relatives before sunrise."
"Alright, I’ll wake you."
"But don’t wake me," said the priest, "until I wake up on my own."
Early in the morning, the hostess woke Tyndale. He got up and, still half-asleep and in the dark, put on the priest’s clothes instead of his own.
By the time the sun rose, Tyndale was already approaching the village where his relatives lived. He noticed the priest’s cassock on himself, stopped, and began to curse:
"What a foolish woman—she woke the priest instead of me!"
