The Little Speckled Hen
Once upon a time, there lived an old man and an old woman, and they had a speckled hen. The hen laid an egg, not an ordinary one—a golden one.The old man tried and tried to break it, but he couldn't.
The old woman tried and tried to break it, but she couldn't.
A mouse ran by, swished its tail, the egg fell and broke.
The old man cries, the old woman cries, and the hen clucks:
"Don't cry, old man, don't cry, old woman: I'll lay you an egg, not a golden one—an ordinary one!"
