The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats
Once upon a time, there lived a goat with her kids. The goat would go into the forest to eat silky grass and drink cold water. As soon as she left, the kids would lock the house and not go out anywhere. When the goat returned, she would knock on the door and sing:- Little kids, my dear ones!
Open up, unlock the door!
Your mother has come, she's brought milk;
The milk flows from the udder,
From the udder to the hoof,
From the hoof into the damp earth!
The kids would open the door and let their mother in. She would feed them, give them water, and then go back to the forest, while the kids would lock themselves in tightly.
One day, the wolf overheard the goat singing. So, when the goat left, the wolf ran to the house and shouted in a deep voice:
- You, little ones!
You, little kids!
Open up,
Unlock the door,
Your mother has come,
She's brought milk.
Her hooves are full of water!
The kids replied:
- We hear, we hear, but that's not our mother's voice! Our mother sings in a thin voice and doesn't lament like that.
The wolf had no choice. He went to the blacksmith and ordered his throat to be reforged so he could sing in a thin voice. The blacksmith reforged his throat. The wolf ran back to the house and hid behind a bush.
Then the goat came and knocked:
- Little kids, my dear ones!
Open up, unlock the door!
Your mother has come, she's brought milk;
The milk flows from the udder,
From the udder to the hoof,
From the hoof into the damp earth!
The kids let their mother in and started telling her how the wolf had come and wanted to eat them.
The goat fed and watered the kids and strictly instructed them:
- Whoever comes to the house and asks in a deep voice and doesn't repeat everything I chant to you - don't open the door, don't let anyone in.
As soon as the goat left, the wolf again ran to the house, knocked, and began to chant in a very thin voice:
- Little kids, my dear ones!
Open up, unlock the door!
Your mother has come, she's brought milk;
The milk flows from the udder,
From the udder to the hoof,
From the hoof into the damp earth!
The kids opened the door, the wolf rushed into the house, and ate all the kids. Only one little kid hid in the stove.
The goat came back, called and chanted as much as she could, but no one answered. She saw the door open, ran into the house, and found no one there. She looked into the stove and found one little kid.
When the goat learned of her misfortune, she sat on the bench and began to grieve, crying bitterly:
- Oh, my little ones, my dear kids!
Why did you open up, why did you unlock,
And fall into the clutches of the evil wolf?
The wolf heard this, entered the house, and said to the goat:
- Why are you blaming me, neighbor? I didn't eat your kids. Stop grieving, let's go to the forest and have some fun.
They went into the forest, and in the forest, there was a pit with a fire burning inside. The goat said to the wolf:
- Let's see, wolf, who can jump over the pit?
They started jumping. The goat jumped over, but the wolf jumped and fell into the hot pit.
His belly burst from the fire, and the kids jumped out, all alive, and ran to their mother! And they lived happily ever after as before.
