How Grandpa Went to School
Once upon a time, there lived a poor old man. One day, he gathered his courage and went to the village council. There, he met a teacher with a cigar in his mouth. The old man said to him:— Smoke! Keep smoking!
— Maybe you'd like to have a smoke too, old man? — the teacher offered him a cigar.
The old man asked:
— Tell me, sir teacher, how is it that you can afford expensive cigars, while I can't even buy simple tobacco?
— Because I went to school — the teacher replied.
The old man walked away, thinking: "I’ll go to school tomorrow too." The next day, he came to the school.
— What can I do for you, old man? — the teacher asked.
— Well, I’ve come to school to study.
— Oh, old man, you’re a bit late for that.
— Well, then take care...
The next day, the old man got up early and went to school again.
— What do you need, old man?
— I’ve come to school earlier today, since you said yesterday that I was a bit late.
The teacher laughed:
— That’s not what I meant, old man! You’re not late for class, it’s just too late to teach you — you’re too old.
— That’s true.
The old man turned back home. As he walked, he found a bag on the road. He picked it up, opened it — and the bag was full of money. The old man and his wife began to live happily.
But one day, they had a fight. The old man hit his wife on the back of the head. Angered, she reported that he had taken someone else’s bag of money.
The old man was dragged to the police, interrogated, and beaten. The owner of the bag — a young gentleman — was found.
The old man was called to court. The judge asked:
— Did you find the money, old man?
— I did.
— And when did you find it?
— When I was going to school.
The judge looked at him: the old man was about seventy, while the gentleman was quite young. "No, this money doesn’t belong to that gentleman." And so, the money remained with the old man.
